What is hearing loss?
Hearing loss is a reduction in the ability to hear sounds in one or both ears. It can be caused by damage to the inner ear, auditory nerves, or even problems in the middle ear. Although it is more common in older people, anyone can develop hearing loss. In fact, research indicates that nearly 8% of the world’s population has some degree of hearing loss, affecting 40% of those over 60 and almost 90% of those over 80.
The good news is that in 90% of cases, hearing loss can be treated. Advanced hearing aids and cochlear implants are now available that significantly improve hearing and quality of life. The sooner hearing loss is detected, the better the adaptation to these solutions will be.
